Our Commitment to the Loudoun County Community

At Riverside Counseling and Psychiatry, we have served the Loudoun County community since 2002, and in that time, we have walked alongside many families navigating the darkest moments of mental health crisis. Suicide prevention is not an abstract cause for us. It is personal, community-level work that we take seriously every day in our practice.

Events like the Out of the Darkness walk, organized by the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, bring our community together to raise awareness, reduce stigma, and honor those lost to suicide. We are proud to stand with our neighbors in Leesburg, Ashburn, Sterling, and across Loudoun County in this shared effort.

Recognizing Warning Signs

Most people who are struggling with suicidal thoughts show signs before a crisis point, and most people who attempt suicide have told someone, directly or indirectly, what they are experiencing. Knowing what to look for matters.

Common warning signs include: talking about wanting to die or being a burden to others; withdrawing from family, friends, and activities; giving away prized possessions; expressing hopelessness or feeling trapped; sudden calmness after a period of severe depression; increased substance use; and reckless behavior. Any one of these signs is worth taking seriously.

What to Do If You’re Concerned

Ask directly. Research consistently shows that asking someone if they're thinking about suicide does not plant the idea, it opens a conversation that may save a life. Listen without judgment. Help them connect to professional support. Remove access to means when possible. Stay with them if they are in acute danger.

If you believe someone is in immediate danger, call 911. If the situation is not immediately life-threatening but urgent, the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline connects callers with trained counselors who can help determine next steps.
