What Is a Specific Phobia?

A specific phobia is an intense, persistent fear of a particular object, animal, situation, or activity that is out of proportion to any actual danger. It triggers immediate anxiety and often leads to significant avoidance. You may know the fear is excessive, but that awareness alone doesn't make it go away.

Phobias are among the most treatable anxiety conditions. Unlike generalized anxiety, they have a clear focus, which makes them well-suited to targeted exposure-based therapy. Most people see meaningful progress faster than they expect.

The Anxiety and Depression Association of America estimates that specific phobias affect 19 million adults in the United States. The National Institute of Mental Health confirms they are among the most common anxiety disorders in adults. They often begin in childhood and persist without treatment.

Phobias We Treat

We treat a wide range of specific phobias, including fear of flying, heights (acrophobia), enclosed spaces (claustrophobia), needles and medical procedures, driving, animals and insects, storms, vomiting (emetophobia), and dental procedures. We also work with blood-injection-injury phobia, which requires specialized pacing techniques.

Beyond specific phobias, we treat agoraphobia and social phobia (social anxiety disorder). If your fear is limiting your daily life or causing you to avoid important activities, we can help.

How Exposure Therapy Works

Exposure therapy is the most effective treatment for specific phobias. Your therapist works with you to build a personalized fear hierarchy, a list of situations arranged from least to most anxiety-provoking. You then work through the hierarchy gradually, at a pace you control, never being forced into anything before you're ready.

Each exposure helps your brain update its threat assessment. Over time, the fear response diminishes because your nervous system learns through experience that the situation is manageable. Many specific phobias respond significantly in just a handful of focused sessions.

Our therapists also offer EMDR therapy for phobias rooted in a specific traumatic memory, and combine it with exposure when clinically appropriate. The American Psychological Association recognizes exposure therapy as among the most evidence-supported treatments available for phobias.

What About Medication?

Medication is not usually the primary treatment for specific phobias. Exposure therapy produces lasting results that medication alone cannot match. That said, for situational phobias (like fear of flying), short-term medication may occasionally help manage acute anxiety alongside therapy.

If you have questions about whether medication is appropriate for your situation, our psychiatrists are available for consultation.

Getting Started

Avoidance provides short-term relief but keeps the fear alive long-term. Working with a skilled therapist gives you the tools to move through fear rather than around it. Use our provider matching tool to find the right fit and schedule your first appointment.
